Illustrated text on history of the qipao now on sale

     Featuring more than 200 images the qipao down the ages, the Hong Kong Museum of History's latest publication, "The Evergreen Classic - Transformation of the Qipao", is now on sale. Along with 400 historical pictures, this fascinating publication catalogues the many different styles and eras of qipao from the Qing dynasty to the present day, depicting the development of the enigmatic dress both socially and culturally. The volume is a must-have item for all qipao lovers.

     Originally produced to review an exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Institute of Textiles and Clothing between June and September in 2010, this latest version of the catalogue focuses on the qipao and its relationship with society and culture from the 1920s to the 1960s, how it further evolved during the 1970s and rose to popularity once again in the mid-1990s.

     Besides the wide range of qipao featured in the exhibition, "The Evergreen Classic - Transformation of the Qipao" also includes those worn by celebrities and actresses including Lin Dai, Josephine Siao, Loletta Lo, Christina Lee, Vera Waters, Michelle Yeoh and Nansun Shi. Qipao specially designed for the exhibition by the teaching staff of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as well as designs from fashion brands also form part of the catalogue.

     With 276 pages and priced at $150, the catalogue is now available in the gift shop of the Hong Kong Museum of History. Holders of a Leisure and Cultural Services Department Museum Pass can enjoy a 10 per cent discount. In addition, a DVD set containing video clips capturing details of some exhibit highlights is also included in the catalogue.

     The Hong Kong Museum of History is located at 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It is open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
