Ninth Cantonese Opera Day to be held on November 27

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present its ninth Cantonese Opera Day on November 27 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

An entertaining programme with free admission and a variety of activities will start at 1.15pm. The programme will include performances of Cantonese opera excerpts and operatic songs, talks and workshops on stylised movements of Cantonese opera, stall games and other activities. Cantonese opera virtuosos Liza Wang, Lee Lung, Sun Kim-long, Ng Chin-fung, Wong Chiu-kwan, Chan Kim-sing, Nam Fung, Lau Wai-ming, Tang Mei-ling, Loong Koon-tin, Wan Fai-yin, Wai Chun-fai, Chan Wing-yee and others will also be present for autograph signing. Additionally, to further Hong Kong's image as a centre of Chinese and Western culture, an English guided tour of the event will be offered for the first time to introduce this legendary art form to overseas visitors.

The cultural sectors of Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong have designated the last Sunday of every November as Cantonese Opera Day to promote the development of the valuable vernacular art of Cantonese opera. Through the staging of this territory-wide activity on a regular basis, it is hoped that a broader audience base can be built to hold the torch of Cantonese opera alight for future generations.

To prepare for the 10th Cantonese Opera Day in 2012, the LCSD has invited people to contribute their snapshots of happy and memorable moments at the event taken over the years. Please see the Cantonese Opera Day leaflets and website for details. Pictures selected will be included in an exhibition to be held in November and December 2012.

For programme details, please refer to the programme leaflet or visit For enquiries, please call 2268 7325.

Ends/Friday, November 11, 2011
