Hong Kong's premier jazz guitarist Mr Eugene Pao and renowned pianist and composer Mr Ted Lo today (October 21) showcased their original songs and contemporary jazz music for Hong Kong Week at Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).

As one of the programmes for Hong Kong Week, "Contemporary Jazz featuring Ted Lo and Eugene Pao" was performed in two sessions at the Baosteel Stage at Shanghai Expo Park in pudong.

The free performances received an enthusiastic response. Another two performances will take place at the same venue tomorrow (October 22).

Mr Eugene Pao and Mr Ted Lo are both first-rate jazz players who have collaborated on stage with a number of world-class musicians and international stars.

The two are also best jazz partners who share similar musical tastes and an enthusiasm for improvisation.

"Jazz has a variety of styles, and we will play anything ranging from Brazilian music to rock and from funky music to Latin style," Mr Lo said.

Mr Pao added: "Jazz always allows foreign elements into it, so anything is possible during improvisation."

A broad spectrum of music is included in their song list.

Describing his music for the concert, Mr Lo said: "'Show Me' blends well with pop elements while 'Another Journey' has an African-Cuban flavour. 'Don't Make Me' is a jazzy rock-ballad and 'Move' has a Latin sound."

"'Song for McCoy' is my tribute to the jazz master McCoy Tyner, a celebrated jazz pianist and also my idol."

Songs by Mr Eugene Pao include a Brazilian bossa nova "Little Steps", a jazz-rock fusion "Barking Up the Right Tree" and a slow ballad "Everywhere is You".

Alongside the two senior musicians, jazz talent from around the world, including bassist Mr Tsang Tak-hong from Hong Kong, Australian drummer Mr Andrew Gander, Brazilian saxophonist Mr Paulo Silveira and percussionist Mr Leonardo Susi have also been invited to join the show.

During Hong Kong Week from October 18 to 22, there will be a kaleidoscope of performances including "Cantonese Opera Performances" by the Hong Kong Children and Juvenile Chinese Opera Troupe; "Generation Singer-Songwriters Concert" by Hong Kong singer-songwriters and "A Soldier's Story" by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
