Calling lantern designers
*************************

Entries are now invited from the public for the Mid-Autumn Lantern Design Competition 2008.

The competition is jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Education Bureau to promote the craft of lantern-making and to arouse public interest in traditional Chinese arts.

The competition comprises three divisions: primary school, secondary school and the open division for tertiary students and amateurs. Primary and secondary students should submit entry forms through their schools.

The open division is now calling for entries. Those interested  should send their entry forms to the department's Entertainment Office, 9/F, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, or by fax to 2575 0864 by July 18.

Each participant may submit only one entry, but the lantern can be made by up to four people. The same lantern cannot be submitted to more than one division.

The handmade lanterns with completed official labels should be submitted to the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central, between September 4 and 6 from 10am to 7pm.

The panel of judges will be made up of arts educationists and arts administrators. The first three winners of each division will be awarded book coupons worth $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200 respectively, and entries judged to be outstanding will be awarded book coupons of $400. Three grand prizes will also be awarded to those with distinguished designs: the lantern with the best visual effect, the most inspirational lantern and the lantern with the most creative design; each winner will receive a book coupon of $500. All winners will also be awarded certificates of merit and other prizes.

All lanterns will be displayed at the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, from September 11 to 20.

Entry forms for the open division are available at the department's major cultural venues and all public libraries, or can be downloaded from the website, www.lcsd.gov.hk/eo.
