Opening Arrangements for Public Swimming Pools under Thunderstorm Warning

If the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) issues a thunderstorm warning and indicates the affected region(s), the outdoor swimming facilities in the region(s) concerned will be temporarily closed.

If the HKO issues a thunderstorm warning without specifying the region(s) affected, the outdoor swimming facilities of an individual swimming pool will be temporarily closed in the following case(s):

(i) there are lightning reports within a 10-km radius of the swimming pool according to the HKO’s Location-specific Lightning Alert webpage, or
(ii) the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal or above is concurrently in force, or
(iii) lightning is observed or frequent thunder is heard within the swimming pool area.

Staff of the affected venue(s) will notify all swimmers through the public address system/loudspeakers that a thunderstorm warning is in force, and request swimmers in outdoor swimming facilities to leave the water immediately and take shelter in indoor or covered areas. Outdoor swimming facilities will be reopened when the above cases no longer apply.
