Multi-award winning Cantonese Opera and Nanyin legend, Yuen Siu-fai, will be joining forces with conductor Ho Man-chuen, Nanyin musicians To Wing and Chan Chi-chun, as well as Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, a group of youngsters actively promoting local music, to perform in two concerts filled with distinctive Hong Kong flavours. Together, they will grace the ears of Taiwan audiences with two unique styles of Hong Kong music – Nanyin and Cantonese music.
In the first concert of Voices of Cantonese Narrative Music, well-known traditional Nanyin pieces of high artistic value, such as Burning Funerary Goods for His Love, will be played alongside a wide selection of enchanting Cantonese music pieces the likes of the delicate Medley of Guangdong Folk Tunes and the vibrant Thunder in a Drought, all of which reflect the local culture of Asia’s World City.
Meanwhile, the TCO Academy Orchestra, comprising musicians hand-picked and nurtured by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra is invited to perform in the Hong Kong Nostalgia concert. Works such as Old Restaurant, Old Drama and Fire. Dragon Dance, which comprise elements unique to Hong Kong, will be premièred in Taiwan by veteran Yuen and young musicians from both territories. This special crossover marks a new chapter in the cultural exchange of the two regions, one where the torch has been passed onto the next generation.
When traditional Cantonese music makes its way to Taiwan, a place where local culture blossoms, sparks are bound to fly! It is a must-see event for followers of traditions and fans of Hong Kong culture alike.
