A Nostalgic Tour of Hong Kong through Built Heritage

Hong Kong is a society in which Eastern and Western elements coexist. Since its economy took off in the 1970s, the city has been filled with skyscrapers – symbols of the local residents’ diligence and tenacity which have given rise to a unique cityscape. Nonetheless, charming historic buildings such as the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower, the Tai Fu Tai manson, the King Yin Lei mansion in the Mid-Levels, and the Western Market in Sheung Wan have been preserved amidst modern development, giving us a glimpse into the metropolis’ past, and how it has transformed and progressed.

Valuable selected items including architectural components, archival materials, artefacts, photographs, and information on facets of daily life such as economic activities, will tell a comprehensive tale of two characters in the city. Through a diverse range of built heritage, the exhibition elaborates on what Hong Kong looked like in its early days, enabling Taiwan audiences to experience its past. Specially designed creative and interactive exhibits, traditional building measurement tools, and advanced three-dimensional scanned images and models will also be displayed. They serve to highlight early craftsmanship and the evolution of conservation practices in Hong Kong, thereby providing an in-depth examination of the city’s built heritage.

Painting Hong Kong’s Built Heritage

Advanced three-dimensional scanning techniques not only help record accurately the dimensions and details of historic buildings, but also enable us to print scaled models to facilitate their conservation. Let us paint these three-dimensional building models using our creativity and imagination to understand how this innovative technology is applied to the conservation of built heritage.
