“Hong Kong Sinfonietta shines.” - Vancouver Sun
A Musical Spectacle where East meets West and Old meets New!
One of the flagship orchestras in Hong Kong having performed in 32 cities around the world in Asia, Europe and America, Hong Kong Sinfonietta is making its début in Taiwan with a programme featuring some of the most sought-after artists from the two metropolises.
Under the baton of Music Director Yip Wing-sie, a highly respected and influential figure in Asia’s orchestral music scene herself, Hong Kong Sinfonietta will be joined by Taiwan’s foremost huqin player Wang Ying-chieh in the world première of Chan Hing-yan's huqin concerto, Ethereal Is the Moon. Lauded for their subtle incorporation of Chinese elements, Chan's works have been heard around the world. Also a huqin player himself, Chan will create a unique sound world with this thousand-year-old Chinese instrument and the modern symphony orchestra.
The concerts in Taipei and Kaohsiung will also mark the Taiwan début of Hong Kong's star pianist Colleen Lee, who will be playing with the Orchestra Ravel's jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G. A prizewinner at numerous international competitions including the 2005 Chopin Competition, Lee has performed with such orchestras as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Warsaw Philharmonic.
The Orchestra will play Shostakovich's playful, almost neoclassical Ninth Symphony before the curtain is closed.
Ethereal Is the Moon – for Huqin & Orchestra (world première)
After presenting the Heart of Coral – A Chamber Opera after the life of Xiao Hong (Hong Kong Week 2014), Professor Chan Hing-yan, the 2013 recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Best Artist Award (Music), will be unveiling another new work bearing his signature east-meets-west composing style in Taiwan this year. In 1998, Prof. Chan completed his career-defining work, Enigmas of the Moon, and went on to create a second piece along the same theme titled And the Moon Winks... in 2008. Eight years later, as the Artist Associate of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, he has composed Ethereal Is the Moon, a third instalment dedicated to the celestial body featuring his instrument of choice, the huqin.
