Launching Ceremony Sparking Enthusiasm for the Olympics

Immediately following the opening of the Olympics on 26 July in 2024, the “Olympics Focal Site” event was launched. The Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Raistlin Lau, expressed at the launching ceremony that there were 35 elite athletes in Hong Kong who had qualified for a total of 13 sports at the Olympics, and he, just like other members of the public, looked forward to Hong Kong athletes’s great successes.

Renowned local athletes, including table tennis athlete Minnie Soo, former member of the Hong Kong Sevens squad Salom Yiu, former cycling representatives Leung Ka-yu and Domino Chau, and former fencer Lo Shan-shan, were also invited to the ceremony, where they gave demonstrations and shared personal feelings and training experiences. Play on sessions were held after the ceremony for public enjoyment of sports, in the hope of augmenting their understanding of Olympic sports and sparking their enthusiasm for the event.

Popular Sports Activities Across Town in Support of the SFAD

Given that the SFAD placed focus on parent-child activities, the LCSD offered free recreation and sports programmes at designated LCSD sports centres across the 18 districts. Moreover, Tai Po Tung Cheong Street Sports Centre featured events such as e-racing for kids, electronic virtual dodge game, Kabaddi participation activity and parent-child 3-on-3 basketball for family engagement. Furthermore, a “Sports For All Day” activity booth was set up during the “Festival of Sports” held by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China on 3 and 4 August at the Free Space of Kwun Tong Town Centre. The booth offered various fun games and experiential activities to further enhance the public’s interest in doing exercise. To show support to the SFAD, over 10 organisations either held free recreation and sports programmes for the public or opened their facilities for their free use.

The events were also broadcasted live on the dedicated webpage and the “LCSD Plusss” Facebook page to facilitate public participation, regardless of where they are.
