When secondary school student Jane (Loletta Lee) is bullied by her classmates, May (May Lo) comes to her rescue. And when the bullies seek revenge, Jane beats up the mean girls. May and Jane become best friends. At around the same time, the girls fall for different men but the arcs of their romances are parallel. The girls help each other pursue their affairs, but each gets in trouble with their very different families. This is the director's portrayal of Hong Kong at the time: young people growing up amid wealth gap and generation gap, with dysfunctional families at every economic level and an education system that is mediocre at best. When their romances end, it seems as if they have come of age—going into the unknown but without much optimism.
