Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band

Established in 1978, the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band (HKYSB) has successfully nurtured generations of eminent young musicians while proactively introducing wind band music to the Hong Kong public.
The HKYSB debuted in 1978 alongside the County of Avon School Orchestra from the United Kingdom. Since then, the HKYSB has had the privilege of performing with numerous international groups, including the Central Band of the Royal Air Force (the United Kingdom), the Tanunda Band of Australia, the Regimental Band of the Green Jackets, the Scots Guards (the United Kingdom), the Narashino Girls’ High School Band from Japan, and the Baden-Württemberg Youth Wind Ensemble. Distinguished conductors who have collaborated with the Band include Bruce Pearson, Dr. Vondis Miller, and Robert Lutt from the United States; Eric Banks from the United Kingdom; Felix Hauswirth from Switzerland; Russell Hammond from Australia; and Li Fang-fang from Beijing.
The HKYSB has conducted several overseas tours to regions such as Kagoshima, Japan; Sydney, Australia; and Hawaii, the United States. In 2013, the Band returned to Jeju, South Korea, to participate in the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, performing in exchange concerts with local bands and choirs. In 2015, the Band received high acclaim at the 24th Chiayi City International Band Festival. In 2018, the HKYSB visited Hamamatsu, Japan, for the 20th APBDA Band Festival and participated in an exchange with the Saitama Kenritsu Shiraoka High School Band in Tokyo. Most recently, in 2025, the HKYSB participated in the Australian International Music Festival in Sydney, where it earned the Gold Award in the Instrumental Category and was named a “Command Ensemble” by the adjudication panel.
With members between the ages of 12 and 25, recruitment for the HKYSB is conducted via open auditions every year.
