Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra

Established in 1978, the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) is one of the flagship music groups managed by the Music Office. Over the past 45 years, the HKYCO has nurtured generations of outstanding Chinese music performers and educators for Hong Kong. It has performed at major events such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Festival Fringe, the Hong Kong International Youth Arts Festival, and the “Music of the Dragons” concert, held in celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The HKYCO was invited to perform in the live broadcast of the “Caritas Charity TV Show” in 2014, 2021, and 2023, as well as variety shows celebrating the 66th and 69th anniversaries of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2015 and 2018, respectively. These highly acclaimed performances often featured collaborations with various celebrities.

Serving as a music ambassador for Hong Kong, the HKYCO has toured extensively to places including the United Kingdom, France, Australia, the United States, Canada, and Malaysia. Since the millennium, the HKYCO has embarked on tours to the Chinese Mainland, Macao, and Taiwan. Notable highlights include the “Tour to the Ancient Cities” to Beijing and Xi’an in 2000; participating in folk music festivals in Nanjing, Wuxi, and Jiangyin in 2007; and attending the 2011 Contemporary Chinese Orchestra Festival in Taichung. More recently, they performed at the Shanghai and Shenyang music conservatories in 2016, held a highly acclaimed joint performance with the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra in 2018, and completed a music exchange tour to Xi’an in 2023, where they staged a well-received joint performance with the Xi’an Music Conservatory Chinese Orchestra.

With members under the age of 25, recruitment for the HKYCO is conducted via open auditions every year.
