2021 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp

 

The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a significant annual summer event organised by the Music Office. Local young musicians are welcome to explore the wonderful world of music by receiving the String/Chinese ensemble training to be conducted by renowned musicians and instructors of the Music Office. The training will conclude with a public performance at the Hong Kong City Hall on 1 August.

Public Concert

Campers are required to perform in the public concert to be held at 7:30 pm on 1 August (Sun) at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall after training.
(Concert tickets will be available at URBTIX outlets from 11 July onwards.)

Application Methods

  • Online application

    Applicant should enter the YouTube link of audition video* in the application system, or mail the audition video together with the completed “Audition Video Submission Form” to the Music Office by the application deadline. Upon submission of application, the system will generate a confirmation email with an application number; the number will be used for checking the result.

    Documents and audition video have to be submitted:
    1) Completed application form
    2) Completed Audition Video Submission Form
    3) CD/USB drive of audition video*
    4) A copy of the mark sheet showing the highest qualification/ grade attained for the instrument
    5) Three self-addressed envelopes with sufficient postage

    Please make sure that all mail items bear sufficient postage. The Music Office will not accept any underpaid mail items and such items will be handled by the Hongkong Post.

    Applicants should call the Office by 5:30pm on 18 May to confirm their applications if they do not receive the application numbers from the Music Office by then.

Selection Arrangement and Application Results

  • With due consideration to the epidemic, no live audition will be arranged this year. Applicants are requested to submit video recordings instead.
  • Applications without providing audition video by the stipulated deadlines will not be considered.
  • The Music Office will notify all applicants of the application results by 24 June.
  • Applicants will not be accepted to more than one training group with the same instrument under normal circumstances.

 

Notes

  • The Music Office shall have the absolute discretion to use any photograph, video or any other record of the participants for any lawful purposes including archiving, advertising and promotion of the event.
  • The Music Office reserves the right to change the training arrangements and guest musicians.
  • Campers must arrange their own daily transportation to and from the Music Office Music Centres during the camp period.
  • Due to the unforeseeable situation of COVID-19, the Music Office has the right to make decision anytime for the cancellation of the Camp and the public concert. Announcement and refund arrangement will be made accordingly.

Remarks:

(1) Age is calculated as at 24 July 2021.
(2) The own-choice pieces or excerpts have to conform to the stipulated level of the group applied.
(3) Scores of the String Orchestra’s set excerpts are available at the “Download Area”.
(4) Please refer to the Notes to Campers for details of training arrangement.
(5) A fee remission scheme(Chinese version Only) is available for local campers with financial difficulties.
(6) If the Camp is cancelled or terminated due to COVID-19, full or partial refund will be arranged. Otherwise, fees paid are not refundable nor transferrable.

1. The applicant must make the video recording in the following order:
a. Announce:

i. the name of applicant;

ii. the name of training group(s) applied for;

iii. the name of composer(s);

iv. the title of piece(s).

b. Show the applicant’s photo and name on student identity card/ student handbook/ identification document to the camera for no less than two seconds;
c. Show the completed “Audition Video Submission Form” to the camera for no less than two seconds;
d. Perform the repertoire (For String Orchestra, applicant must perform the repertoires according to the performing order stipulated in the requirements.)
2. The video must be recorded according to the following specifications:
a. Resolution of video must be 720p (1280x720) or above;
b. The video must be a single, continuous shot video footage without any pause;
c. If there is more than one piece in the repertoire, they must also be recorded in the same video;
d. Re-tuning of instrument or break between pieces (if any) must be included as part of the continuous recording;
e. The video must be recorded live and no dubbing is permitted;
f. The audio and video must be synchronized and smooth, and the sound quality is clear;
g. The shooting must be done indoors in a quiet environment with sufficient lighting. Backlight has to be avoided;
h. The applicant’s face, both hands and the whole of instrument must be clearly shown throughout the video;
i. The camera must be kept stable when shooting. Fixed shooting without any movements or zooming is required;
j. Where an accompanist is part of the performance, he/she must also be visible in the video;
k. Only applicant and accompanist (if any) are allowed to be visible in the video;
l. No special effects (such as filters, transitions, colour adjustments, light adjustments or subtitles, etc.), mixing, editing or post-production are permitted.
3. The applicant is advised to take video at home or other safe environment without wearing the face mask. Nevertheless, applicants/parents have to assess their own health risk and follow the health advice from the Government at that time.

4. Name the video title/ file name according to the following specified format:

5. For online application, please upload the audition video onto YouTube in accordance with the following guidelines:
a. Set the video as “Unlisted” (Do not set as “Private”, otherwise, assessment cannot be proceeded);
b. Enter the YouTube link^ into the online application system, and ensure the link is accessible before 1 July;
c. If the applicant applies for more than one training group with different musical instruments, please create separate YouTube links for the respective musical instruments. Each link is only for a single musical instrument.
^ Non-YouTube link (such as Google Drive) is not accepted. If YouTube link is not provided in the online application system, the applicant must mail the audition video together with the completed “Audition Video Submission Form” to the Music Office (Address: Activities & Promotion Section, Music Office, 5/F, South Tower, West Kowloon Government Offices, 11 Hoi Ting Road, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon) by the application deadline. Please see point 6 for details.
6. If the applicant submits the application / audition video by post, please save the audition video onto a CD/USB drive in accordance with the following guidelines:
a. Please ensure that the video can be played by Windows Media Player or Quick Time (the file format must be in MOV, MPEG4 or M4V);
b. Please put the name of the applicant and musical instrument on the CD/USB drive;
c. Applicants have to collect their CDs/USB drives at the Music Office Hong Kong Music Centre from 2 to 31 August (Monday to Friday: 9:30 am to 12:45 pm and 1:45 pm to 6:00 pm). Otherwise, the devices shall be regarded as abandonment and destroyed;
d. If the applicant applies for more than one training group with different musical instruments, please submit separate CD/USB drives for the respective musical instruments. Each CD/USB drive is only for a single musical instrument.
7. Any application without providing audition video on time will not be considered.
