Despite a distinguished 30-year career with a number of classic films, director Stanley Kwan is still as active as ever, producing and directing films in Mainland China. For this retrospective, Kwan specifically chose three of his most beloved collaborations with late scriptwriter Chiu Kang-chien. In addition to paying tribute to his longtime friend, Kwan will also talk about the spirit of partnership between a director and his writer using these three films as examples.
Kwan has often been regarded as a director of “female oriented films” for his sensitive and insightful portrayal into the female psyche. The filmmaker has specifically chosen two short films in response: Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema (1996) reflects his views on gender, sexuality and familial relationships, and Still Love You After All These (1997) shows his personal feelings – as well as doubts – towards nationality and gender in the face of the 1997 Handover. We are honored to have Kwan join us to offer his insights on his works and how they are linked to society and history.
