A Better Tomorrow not only kick-started the “hero gangster” genre which came to define Hong Kong cinema but also established a cinematic style unique to Hong Kong. The two infamous gangster heroes played by Chow Yun-fat and Ti Lung have become a typical model of male-bonding, to be adopted in many crime films to follow. The compelling hero, the milieu that surrounds him and the psychology that governs that world, imagined and realised by Lung Kong 20 years before, remain intact.
