There is often sadness to the best of comedians, for what makes us laugh almost always connects to what makes us cry. Laugh, Clown, Laugh is one of Mandarin cinema's best comedies, largely because it tells a very sad story. Bao Fong, in a career-defining performance, plays a bank clerk who loves being funny and when he finds himself unemployed, makes a living performing comedy, much to the shame of his family. Made by the left-wing company Great Wall, the film effectively sets the story against a backdrop of social prejudice and class injustice, making the laughter all the more poignant and the sadness connected with it all the more powerful.
