Cast: Linda Lin Dai, Chao Lei, Jin Quan (aka King Hu), Yang Zhiqing

Based on the exploits of The Swallow Thief Lee San, this version of the tale depicts the famous outlaw as a thief who only robs wicked businessmen. Most of the story takes the perspective of policeman Lee Debiao (Chao Lei) and Yan Niu (Linda Lin Dai), the granddaughter of the martial arts master who helps Debiao hunt down the Swallow Thief. After the two fall in love, a high-level policeman who wants Niu for himself frames Biao as the Swallow Thief, leading to a dangerous rescue mission. The film follows director Yueh’s thematic trademark by showing oppressed people fighting against corrupted authorities. In addition to the strong characters, the film’s astonishingly detailed set is also gorgeous shot in widescreen. Yueh also pulled off the difficult task of filming dramatic scenes in the style of an action film, achieving the difficult balance between action and drama.
