As Shaw Bros and MP & GI jockeyed to make Huangmei Diao films, Great Wall and Feng Huang, two leftist studios of the day, enlisted opera talents from the mainland to produce a wealth of costume singsong films. Besides the Shaoxing opera pictures starring Hsia Moon, this full-colour widescreen romantic comedy directed by Li Pingqian is another great work. Li started his career in Shanghai earlier than Yueh, and became a major force in the Great Wall stable after coming down to Hong Kong. While following the narrative from Suzhou Tanci, this film is not confined to any particular opera genre but gathers under one roof a vast array of musical styles. And compared with the later adaptation by Yueh, this version has a lighter tone and a set at once abstract and elaborate.
