The Three Smiles (1969)

Dir/Scr: Griffin Yueh Feng
Cast: Ivy Ling Bo, Li Ching, Jing Miao, Chen Yanyan, Wei Pinao
1969 / Colour / D Beta / Mandarin / Chi & Eng Subtitles / 111min

Considered the last Huangme i Diao masterpiece before the genre faded away in the wave of new martial arts, contemporary action and softcore porn movies. Yueh’s direction was lyrical and calm instead of sensational. Ling’s interpretation of Tang Yin, the leading character, was more a compassionate gentleman than a free-spirited playboy. On the other hand, Li Ching added a serene and gentle touch in portraying Chiu Hsiang, traditionally a joyous and sharp character. Music and songs in the movie never overshadowed the drama. Mise-en-sc ne was complex and tasteful as usual. Pao Hsuehli, the cinematographer in Yueh’s martial arts movies, occasionally employed hand-held shots to give a sense of reality. There have been various attempts in dramatising Tang Yin’s courtship story and Yueh offers us the subtle and elegant alternative.
