The Dividing Wall (Reference Film)

Dir: Zhu Shilin Scr: Wen Bai
Cast: Han Fei, Lee Ching, Ella Kiang, Lan Qing, Shi Lei
1952 / B&W / D Beta / Mandarin / 98min

With a setting similar to that of A Love Story, this film replaces the two pairs of lovers within a love triangle. The teacher Lee Ching and the typist Han Fei share a room divided by a wooden partition. They constantly argue due to small misunderstandings. The new tenant Ella Kiang, a female teacher, notes this and tries to mediate between them, convincing both men that they should help each other to face the hardships of life. An episode from Zhu Shilin’s series “The Happiness of Living Together”, this film derives its subject from the realities of Hong Kong, alluding to the housing shortage in the 50s and the rife speculation in a mild and sentimental manner. It emphasizes people sharing their lives together, and advocates mutual respect and understanding, as well as cooperation to improve the macro environment. Zhu is skilled at the dramatic structure and the design of the setting. The rooms of the three protagonists are islands, but also serve as intermediaries for their interaction. The three people in three rooms are brought together by a naughty kitten, the loud sounds of a radio and love letters hidden in a book. While reflecting on the philosophy of love, the film concentrates on the leftists’ ideals of human relations. When one person leaves for the  mainland, the others that are staying have to take over the work left behind.
