1947 / B&W / D Beta / Mandarin / 96min

Yueh resumed directing only after twists and turns as he had engaged in the film industry in the occupied area during the Sino-Japanese War. Three Females , a story about post-war recovery, highlights the fates and destiny of three women who choose their lives differently. They include Jianhua (Li Lihua), a student come looking for a job in Shanghai and bravely resists harassment and cherishes a progressive life. Her friend Li Ping (Luo Lan) is abandoned by her husband and has to face the ill fate of selling her body, while cousin Lu Sha (Chen Qi) suffers under her own vanity. Yueh inherits the tradition of woman's film of the 1930s to depict new wounds of women. Rid of foreign invasions and trying to rebuild their home, Chinese nationals can never stay away from agonies. Yueh is a subtle  narrator that portrays his characters with controlled camera movements. He mourns for the losers in and after the war and makes it clear that as a survivor, one has but to devote to the reconstruction of his own country.
