The film begins from 19 years after where Part One left off. Instead of presenting the story from the viewpoint of Lui Bik-man and Lui Tak-sing, A Man’s Betrayal, Part Two focuses first on how their children meet and become friends. It is only until a tragedy of family ethics is about to happen that the film reveals the misunderstandings and conflicts between Bik-man and Tak-sing in the past. It is an ambitious screenplay with several convoluted plot threads, yet each plotline is advanced at a good pace. The second half of the film transforms its initial romance into a crime movie centering on the character Yip Kuen (Keung Chung-ping), revealing the unknown misery faced by veteran soldiers like Yip. Yip’s life contrasts with the beautiful future the young generation yearns for, adding regret to the otherwise happy reunion ending. The film well epitomizes Chor Yuen’s outstanding attainment in balancing cinematic genres and realism.
