Lam Siu-fong (Sheung-kwun Kwan-wai) and her brother, for whom she helps transfer stolen goods, are arrested by Detective Ma Yuk-lun (Sima Wah-lung). As the story unfolds, what looks like a noirish detective suspense now turns into a Gothic melodrama reminiscent of Jane Eyre . Released from prison, Lam is hired by a rich family to take care of the old master of the house, where she falls in love with the young son, only to find out that the elder son of the family is none other than Detective Ma. Cheng Kang’s adoption of a cross-genre narrative and thematic design is apparently influenced by Western literature and film. Forced to re-examine the heavy cost she paid in the past for not standing up against her circumstances, the heroine finally breaks away with her own limitations and courageously moves on to a bright new future. Despite a limited budget, Ng Wui achieves an almost expressionist style that spices up the story.
