Father and Son marks Allen Fong Yukping’s directorial debut and his transition from television to big screen, which won the Best Film and Best Director Award at the first Hong Kong Film Awards. The screenplay is co-written by new- (Lilian Lee Bik-wah and Alfred Cheung Kin-ting) and old-generation (Chan Chiu) scriptwriters yet tinged with autobiographical elements (the cineaste son stands for none other than Fong). The story begins as the father (Shi Lei) dies of heart attack after receiving his son’s graduation certificate. As a low-level employee whose career is limited by his academic qualification, the father puts all his hope in his goodfor- nothing son to the effect that he even sacrifices the careers and personal happiness of his two daughters to finance his overseas studies. One of the plot’s predecessors is Ng Wui’s classic Story of Father and Son (1954), which elicits fruitful comparisons. Fong’s film focuses on the touching details of the fatherson interactions, including entwined love and hate, self-reflection and guilt. Amid the restless Hong Kong New Wave filmmakers, the director and scriptwriters have inherited the realism and humanism of the Cantonese cinema, looking back at their formative years with tenderness.
