Hong Kong was awakening to an awkward awareness of its own history during the countdown towards the Reunification and the movies responded with tongue-in-cheek nostalgia. 92 The Legendary la Rose Noire was not only a surprise hit when it was released but also a phenomenon that defined its time. The film's irreverent drama and director Jeff Lau's genius in taking audience imagination through time and space captured the spirit of early 1990's Hong Kong and the people's ambivalence towards the past. At once heartfelt homage and delicious parody, the film takes off from Jane Bond movies like Black Rose (1965) and goes on to offer a hilarious ride of history through popular culture.
