An evocative family portrait, beautifully painted with an internal rhythm that ebbs and flows through the nuances of domesticity and family  relations. Pinning all hopes on a ne’erdo-well son who’s wasting away in comic books and films, a salaryman father (a role to which the Mandarin cinema veteran Shi Lei brought depth and sensitivity) uses his every means to send the son to study abroad, even sacrificing his daughter’s marriage in the process... This landwork work of Hong Kong New Wave won Best Film and Best Director at the first Hong Kong Film Awards.
