Yuen Siu-fai’s roles in these television dramas produced by RTHK were considered a career breakthrough for the actor as he took on dramatically heavier roles for the first time. In Pawn, Yuen plays a pickpocket with a heart of gold, who eventually becomes the caretaker of a frail old man he encounters on the street. In Wild Child, Yuen is a junkie who often roams a cemetery, silently looking on a group of children who spend their days playing and making money off visitors. When the junkie tries to steal one of the children’s money, he is caught and beaten up by the children. Twenty years later, Yuen returns to RTHK for 1994’s Revisiting the Shum’s Garden. Named after the climax of Cantonese Opera show Long-cherished Love, the drama stars Yuen as a Cantonese Opera veteran reminiscing the past while putting together a troupe of his own for the first time. A longtime Cantonese Opera performer himself, Yuen appears to be right at home during his on-screen performance of Revisiting the Shum’s Garden.
