2023 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp

Wind Ensemble Conducting Masterclass (conducted in English)

Provide a learning platform for school music teachers, orchestra conductors and music students / graduates of tertiary institutes to refine their musicality and techniques in conducting with the aim of striving for better band / ensemble / orchestral development in Hong Kong. Applicants can choose to participate in the masterclass as (i) Active Participants or (ii) Observers.

 

Syllabus:   

  1. 1. Roles of conductor
  2. 2. The “why” behind conducting
  3. 3. Conducting techniques
  4. 4. Rehearsal strategies
  5. 5. Score study and marking
  6. 6. Listening skills
  7. 7. Every active participant will have podium time to work with a live wind ensemble in the designated sessions.

 

Zheng Masterclass (conducted in Cantonese and Putonghua)

Provide a valuable training experience for zheng learners under the professional guidance of zheng master. Applicants can choose to participate in the masterclass as (i) On-site Participants or (ii) Online Observers. On-site Participants need to play one of the following set pieces during the Masterclass:

 

  1. 1.            Battling a Typhoon (by Wang Changyuan)
  2. 2.            Drums Resound on Incense Mountain (by Qu Yun)

 

Online Application: 10/5-8/6

  • Upon a successful application submission, a confirmation email with an application number will be generated by the system for the applicant to check the application result at a later stage.
  • Applicants should call the Music Office by 5:30pm on 13 June to confirm their applications are successfully submitted if the application numbers are not received by then.
  • Oversubscription of applications will be processed by ballot. Applicants are welcome to attend the ballot to be conducted at the Music Office Hong Kong Music Centre at 3pm on 16 June. The balloting results will be announced on the Music Office website on 19 June. Applicants are suggested to check the results online.
  • Successful applicants have to pay the fees in the form of crossed cheques by post or in person at the above Music Centre by 30 June.
  • Application for remaining vacancies, if any, will be accepted at the above Music Centre on a first-come-first-served basis from 18 July. Please visit the Music Office website for details.

 

Notes

  • Participants and observers shall observe all rules laid down by the Music Office (including all epidemic prevention measures), otherwise the Music Office reserves the right to terminate their training.
  • Camp fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • The Music Office reserves the right to change/cancel the training and substitute the hosts of the masterclasses.
  • The Music Office shall have the absolute discretion to use any photographs, videos and any other records of the masterclasses for any lawful purposes including archiving, advertising and promotion of the event.

(2) Wind Ensemble Conducting Masterclass: Applicants for being Active Participants are required to provide supporting documents during

      applications to prove that they are school music teachers, orchestra conductors or music students/graduates of tertiary institutes.

(3) Zheng Masterclass: Every applicant (on-site participant or online observer) is required to provide during application a copy of marksheet

      showing the highest qualification/grade attained for the zheng.

(4) Fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
