2019 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp

 

The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is one of the most significant annual events organised by the Music Office in summer. International musicians will be invited to give training to more than four hundred young musicians. The Music Camp also welcomes non-local musicians to explore the wonderful world of music together.

Camp A of the 2019 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp will be held at the Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre, where young musicians will participate in orchestral training programmes and other music activities such as workshops and in-camp concerts. Camp B is a non-residential training, which orchestral/ choral training programmes and other music activities will take place at designated Music Office Music Centres during day time.

Camp A (In-camp residential training)

Public Concerts

 

Campers will be required to perform in the following public concerts:
Camp A: 28 July (Sunday) 8pm  Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall
Camp B: 4 August (Sunday) 3pm Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall
(Remarks: tickets will be available for sale at URBTIX outlets from 10 May onwards.)

Camp A [22 to 27 July (6 days 5 nights)]

Group Entry Requirements Training Venue Fee

Chinese Orchestra Age: 12-25
  • Ability to perform one of the following instruments and attain the required qualification:
Chinese musical instruments
MOIA I-3 or Grade 5 or above; or equivalent; or having learnt for 5 years or more.
Cello / Double Bass
MOIA I-1 or Grade 3 or above; or equivalent; or having learnt for 3 years or more.
Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre HK$1,688 per person
Junior Chinese Orchestra Age: 10-16
  • Ability to perform one of the following instruments and attain the required qualification:
Chinese musical instruments
MOIA I-1 or Grade 3 or above, or equivalent; or having learnt for 3 years or more
Cello / Double Bass
MOIA E-2 or Grade 2 or above; or equivalent; or having learnt for 2 years or more.
Symphonic Band Age: 12-25
  • Ability to perform a wind/percussion instrument and attain the required qualification:
  • ABRSM Grade 5 or MOIA I-3 or above; or equivalent.

Remarks:
(1) Age is calculated as of 22 July 2019.
(2) The camp fee will cover accommodation and three meals a day during the residing period. A fee remission scheme is available for local campers with financial difficulties.
(3) Camp residence and camp fee for non-local campers of Camp A are as follows:

28 July (Sunday) Check-out before 12 nn

Camp B [29 July to 3 August (6 days)]

ABRSM Grade 7 or MOIA A-2 or above; or equivalent.
Music Office Mong Kok Music Centre
Junior Symphony Orchestra Age: 10-17
  • Ability to perform one of the following instruments and attain the required qualification:
Violin and Harp
ABRSM Grade 6 or MOIA A-1 or above; or equivalent. Viola / Cello / Double Bass
ABRSM Grade 5 or MOIA I-3 or above; or equivalent Winds and Percussion Sections (excluding saxophone)
ABRSM Grade 5 or MOIA I-3 or above; or equivalent.
Music Office Kwun Tong Music Centre

Remarks:
(1)Age is calculated as of 22 July 2019.
(2)Training starts at 9:30 am and ends around 5 pm. Details will be informed upon acceptance of the application.
(3)Local campers of Camp B must arrange their daily transportation to and from the designated Music Office Music Centres and meals. A fee remission scheme is available for local campers with financial difficulties.
(4)Non-local campers of Camp B must arrange their accommodation, meals, and daily transportation to and from the Music Office Music Centres.
(5)Camp fees paid are non-refundable.
Application Deadline
1 April; date on postmark should not be later than the deadline.

Application Procedures

Online application
  • Upon submission of application, the application system will generate a confirmation email with an application number; the number will be used for checking the result.

By post
  • Completed application forms should be mailed or submitted to the following address, together with a copy of the mark sheet showing the highest qualification/ grade attained for the instrument/ voice, and three self-addressed envelopes with sufficient postage:

Application other than the above methods will not be accepted.
Applicants should call the Office by 6 pm on 12 April if they do not receive the application numbers from the Music Office by then.

Date of Audition and Application Results
  • The audition will take place on 1 May (public holiday); an alternative date will be arranged in the circumstances of inclement weather or under other unforeseeable situation.
  • Applicants who missed the audition will not be considered.
  • Applicants should call the Office by 25 April if they do not receive any notification to audition. However, applicants who fail to meet the entry requirements will not be invited to audition.
  • Applicants will be informed of the results by 31 May.
  • Applicants will not be accepted to more than one training group with the same instrument, unless under special circumstances.
The Music Office shall have the absolute discretion to use any photograph, video or any other record of the participants for any lawful purposes including archiving, advertising and promotion of the event.

Local Applicants
  • Successful applicants will be required to join the pre-camp rehearsals to be held at the Music Office Music Centres within the week before the start of camp. Details will be announced upon acceptance of the application.
  • Absence from the pre-camp rehearsals must be approved by the Music Office in advance.
  • Campers of Camp A must reside in the camp. Application for temporary leave will be granted at the sole discretion of the Music Office in advance.
  • Campers of Camp B must arrange their meals and daily transportation to and from the designated Music Office Music Centres during the camp period.

Non-local Applicants
  • Must be a citizen outside of Hong Kong and is currently studying abroad.
  • Submit one letter of recommendation, which can be from school/ music organisation abroad that applicants have an affiliation with.
  • If a non-local applicant cannot attend the audition, a performance video must be submitted via one of the following options:
    -Provide a link through the online application system, or
    -Send in a CD together with the application form, which Windows Media Player or Quick Time can read the disc. If under a separate cover otherwise, the disc must reach the Music Office by 24 April marked with ‘2019 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Audition’ on the envelope.
  • To encourage youth music exchange, Parsons Music Foundation, sponsor of the 2019 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp, offers scholarships for non-local campers of outstanding calibre to participate in the camp. The scholarships would be rendered through waiving of camp fees for selected non-local campers.
  • Successful applicants of Camp A are responsible for their visa, passage, and accommodation before and after the Camp. They are also required to take out a medical and accidental insurance policy for their own protection. Campers of Camp A must reside in the camp. Application for temporary leave is granted at the sole discretion of the Music Office in advance. In the event of any unforeseen circumstances such as typhoon, which causes the closure of the campsite, alternative off-camp accommodation will be provided by the Music Office.
  • Successful applicants of Camp B are responsible for their visa, passage, accommodation, meals and daily transportation to and from the respective Music Office Music Centres during their stay in Hong Kong. They are also required to take out a medical and accidental insurance policy for their own protection.
