The governments of Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau signed an agreement on sports exchange and co-operation on December 29, 2003 to raise the standard of sports in the three areas. The proposed exchange and co-operation programmes will include: competition sports; community sports; exchange and training of sports personnel; scientific studies and academic exchange on sports and co-operation in the sports industry. The three governments will set up a steering group to work out the details of the programmes and to confirm the implementation schedule. The department will assist in implementing the respective programmes.
