To overthrow the Qing imperial rule and build a republic, Dr Sun Yat-sen wrote that his desire for revolution originated in China's defeat in the Sino-French War (1885) in the 'Youzhi Jingcheng' (literally, where there is a will, there is a way) chapter of The Sun Wen Doctrines, which was published in 1919. Reflecting on his 30 years of striving for the revolutionary cause, Dr Sun lamented the damage resulting from the success of revolution and the failure to build a strong country. Retrospection about the beginning of the revolution was meant to give encourgement not just for himself, but also to his followers. Dr Sun regarded his medical studies in Hong Kong from 1887 to 1892 as the exploratory period of the revolution. During that period, Dr Sun met frequently with Chan Siu-pak, Yau Lit and Yeung Hok-ling to delve into revolutionary discourses, thoughts and issues. Because of their impudent and insurgent statements, their friends and families in Hong Kong and Macau nicknamed them the 'Four Great Outlaws'.

2021 marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, the 155th birthday of Dr Sun, and the 110th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution. To commemorate this special year, the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum and the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Zhongshan, Guangdong province jointly organised this exhibition to present through historical objects and pictures the stories of the revolutionary activities of the 'Four Great Outlaws' and the dissimilar paths they followed until the end of their lives, and to illustrate how the examination of the group photo of the 'Four Great Outlaws' can shed light on the history of modern Chinese revolutions.
