Designated as M44, the Beehive Cluster is an open cluster located in the constellation Cancer. It consists of about 1,000 stars. The cluster is at about 600 light years away from the Earth, but it is already a very close deep sky object.

The image shows a deep sky photo taken in Sai Kung. The region of densely packed stars at the middle of the image is a typical appearance of an open cluster. This cluster is also called "The Beehive Cluster" as it is recognised as a hive of bees.

The best time of year to observe M44 is from February to May when the constellation Cancer rises high in the night sky. However, both Cancer and M44 are faint objects observable only in dark places. A modern telescope is required in order to see a similar image as shown here.
