Student Work of the "Traditional Craftsmanship．Transmission of Paper Crafting Technique" Workshop

The Paper Crafting Technique, an item inscribed onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Hong Kong, is closely related to our everyday lives. Paper craft products of various forms and scales are commonly used in traditional Chinese festival celebrations or religious rituals and the technique for making them is even described as conveying the history and culture of different ethnic groups.

 

Supported by the Community-driven Projects 2020 under the ICH Funding Scheme, veteran paper crafting master Hui Ka-hung held a series of workshops entitled "Traditional Craftsmanship．Transmission of Paper Crafting Technique", teaching students in person how to craft lanterns for the Mid-Autumn Festival, lion heads, fa pau (floral shrines) and paper offerings. Students not only shared the joys of making paper craft items, but also gained an in-depth understanding of the technique and the development of the local paper crafting industry.

 

The exhibition presents some of the students' work with a view to raising public awareness and interest in the paper crafting technique, as well as transmitting and disseminating this ICH item and the traditional culture that it embodies.
