Revamping of Hong Kong Railway Museum

The Hong Kong Railway Museum at Tai Po is a showcase of the local railway history. Apart from the museum building itself was formerly the Tai Po Market railway station, the venue exhibits a rich collection of historical train coaches and other related objects offering an invaluable experience for visitors to be in touch with railway stories.

While the oversized train coaches fabricated with wrought iron and mild steel are situated in an outdoor setting, eventual occurrence of metal corrosion is almost unavoidable and therefore it's the prime duty of metal conservators to take care of them for their long term well-being. Suffering from varying degrees of metal corrosion, material loss, surface coating depletion and suspected structural damage, conservation programme had been undertaken to conserve diesel electric engine No. 51, train coaches "No. 223" and "No. 276", and related railway objects as part of the regular maintenance programme.
