The "Contact" has moved to a new home

The Art Promotion Office relocated the sculpture "Contact" which was originally situated at the Memorial Garden of the City Hall in Central to the Lynwood Sitting-Out Area in Tin Shui Wai in 2014.

"Contact" was forged in bronze and brass.  As the surface of the sculpture had been exposed to the elements of nature for years, there were signs of wear and tear.  Fortunately, the overall structure of the artwork remained sound which facilitated the subsequent work of demolition and relocation.  In the course of planning and preparation for the relocation exercise, we researched extensively on the details of design and installation plans to better understand how it was originally installed.

The concrete base of the original sculpture measured 40cm thick, hence required heavy duty machine for cutting.  Advanced cutting machinery cannot only cut through a concrete structure of close to half a metre in width, but also significantly reduce the amount of noise and pollution in the cutting process.  After successfully separating the sculpture from its concrete base, the team continued to remove the remaining residues of concrete manually to further examine the structure of the base of the sculpture.

After transferring "Contact" to its new residence, the working team examined again the structural condition of the artwork and the dimensions of the new base to ensure precision in every detail. With the concerted efforts of the team members, "Contact" was successfully installed.  After a series of final conservative work including regilding, removing corrosion and applying protective coating, "Contact" was brought back to life in a new community.
