Highlights and Objectives

  • A school-year-long project on Shakespeare English drama
  • For secondary and primary schools’ students who are interested in Shakespeare English drama
  • Read, analyse and adapt Shakespeare drama with students to nurture their interest in English drama and their ability to appreciate, as well as to build up self-confidence
  • Project includes professional theatre show appreciation, drama workshops, audition and rehearsals
  • Participating students will have a public performance at a professional performing venue

Content

All schools will be learning Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Hamlet is one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare's with "To be, or not to be, that is the question" as one of the most widely recognized Shakespearean lines. Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest drama and one of the most powerful and influential plays in English literature.

Prince Hamlet returns home to attend his father’s funeral to find his mother has married his father’s brother! Whilst grappling with his emotions he finds all is not well in the castle, and the ghost of his father appears to advise him - should he trust this spirit and does it’s bidding? What price has his Uncle paid for his new-found power as King? Let’s find out together.

Event Date Activities
Phase 1:
Professional Theatre Performance and Back Stage Appreciation
Sept / Oct 2019 Students will watch the professional children and teenage drama performance: Hamlet, Shakespeare English drama at a public performing theatre. This will allow students to develop more interest in English drama and professional stage production.

Students will enjoy a backstage tour after watching the performance, and appreciate the work and efforts required to make the front stage performance, and may as well discover some little secrets of stage effects, and be inspired.
Phase 2:
Drama Workshops, Audition and Rehearsal (20 sessions)

July 2020
Drama Workshops
In groups, students have the opportunity to practice their lines and are guided through the language and grammar to strengthen their techniques of public speaking that engages their audience and builds their self-confidence as well as giving a greater understanding to the story. The workshops include open discussion, role play and improvisation.

Role assignment and Rehearsals
Students will consolidate their basic knowledge in drama and experience the process of stage production through audition and rehearsals. Apart from taking part in the performance, students will also participate in making of sets, props and costumes. Each school will play 15 to 20 minutes of the play Hamlet.
Phase 3:
Final Rehearsal (2 sessions) and Finale Performance ( 1 session)
July 2020 The final rehearsals and finale Performance will take place at a professional performing venue. Students will represent their schools to join the performance. There will be final rehearsals at the theatre.
