Zuni Icosahedron
Freespace Tech Lab

Programme offered by the arts group in support of the “2017/18 (For school purchase only)
Arts Experience Scheme for Senior Secondary Students”

Zuni Icosahedron

Founded in 1982, is one of the nine major professional arts companies in Hong Kong, and has established itself as a premiere experimental theatre locally, regionally and internationally. Zuni’s theatre has always stayed on the cutting edge of media technology in presenting the interactive relationship between multimedia and theatre, as well as in probing the possibilities of form and content in 'theatre space' through experimentation and exploration.

Zuni has been most inspiring in developing the aesthetics of theatre in Chinese society, with its experimental and subversive nature, and this could be seen in the interactive experiments in the narrative (or rather non-narrative), form and space in its early works. The same spirit could be found in the multimedia design in lights, images, sounds and spaces as in the attempts in the area of cross-media performances, to cross-boundary political and civil area, and to cross-region international cultural exchanges. The topics covered stretch from popular culture to social taboos, from the traditional to the contemporary.

Zuni Icosahedron is financially supported by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Zuni Icosahedron is a Venue Partner of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Programme Content

Theatre is a real-time and real-space experience. Audience experiences a live performance with performers on stage as well as with interactions among lighting, music and multimedia. Apart from the actors, the backstage crew who produces the effects on stage, lighting and music also plays a crucial part in theatre performances. How do these “unsung heroes” work? How to run a performance smoothly?

In November 2017, Zuni turns Hong Kong Cultural Centre to “Freespace Tech Lab” and carries out a series of interactive experiments of stage technology and creativity. This workshop will be held in a performance space encircled with four-side mirrors. Under professional stage technicians’ instructions, students will:

  • Get into this specially designed space to watch a demonstration of stage tech with multimedia
  • Visit stage facilities, including the backstage, the control room and the rigging system
  • Learn the elements and applications of stage technology, including the operations of projection mapping, lighting and the rigging system
  • Try operating the above elements of stage tech
