When the vast, timeless spirit of Chu Ci (The Songs of the South) meets the grandeur of the Austro-German symphonic tradition, and the poetic spirit of the East embraces Western classics, internationally acclaimed maestro Tan Dun joins forces with the China National Symphony Orchestra to present 9 & 9 concert. This symphonic choral concert brings a dialogue between civilisations spanning thousands of years to resounding life in Hong Kong, where East meets West.
Beethoven's Ninth, with its sweeping musical narrative, gives voice to humanity's great hymn to universal joy and continues to inspire a profound faith in freedom and brotherhood. Tan Dun's Choral Concerto: 9 masterfully reimagines the spiritual world of the ancient people of Chu, transforming the ritual music of ancient sacrificial rites into a modern symphonic poem. It is a heartfelt dialogue with heaven, earth and the divine, as well as a dazzling expression of Eastern aesthetics on the contemporary music scene. In 2026, join us in Hong Kong for this spectacular symphonic event, bask in the radiant brilliance of civilisation and experience the soul-stirring power of music!

A major musical highlight of the year comes to Hong Kong, with internationally acclaimed maestro Tan Dun joining the China National Symphony Orchestra for a spectacular programme that brings together Western classical traditions and the poetic tradition of Chu Ci. Together, they take audiences on a magnificent musical journey exploring the human spirit, paying tribute to life and celebrating the power of music.
Beethoven's Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus opens the programme in grand style; two rising string talents perform Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola; Tan Dun's Choral Concerto: 9 explores the connections between humanity and nature, tradition and the future through Eastern poetic sensibility and contemporary musical language; and the programme culminates in Beethoven's immortal classic Ode to Joy, celebrating the ideal of universal harmony in grand, resounding music. Bringing impressive international experience to the stage, violinist Nina Wong has performed in leading concert halls around the world, while Yan Lok Hoi has established a strong presence on the Vienna music scene and serves as Principal Viola of the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg. These two local young musicians return home after completing their studies to share the stage. With celebrated works from East and West, distinguished artists and renowned ensembles coming together, this is a concert not to be missed!
