A graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London, Angus Lee has appeared at major music festivals as a flautist, composer or conductor in Europe and Asia, such as the Asian Composers League (ACL) Asian Music Festival in Japan, the CYCLE Music and Art Festival in Iceland, the International ilSUONO Contemporary Music Week in Italy, the IRCAM ManiFeste in France, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the Seoul International Computer Music Festival in South Korea, the Shanghai New Music Week in the Mainland and the Ticino Musica Festival in Switzerland.

Lee is recognised as one of the leading flautists in Hong Kong specialising in contemporary music, lauded for his dynamic and detail-oriented approach to interpretation.  He became flautist of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble in 2016.  Dedicated to the promotion of contemporary music in his performative and pedagogical capacities, he has not only taken part in regional and world premieres of works by local and international composers, but also hosted numerous workshops for student composers in a bid to nurture music innovators of the forthcoming generation.

As a composer, Lee was initially autodidactic.  Since 2016, he has undertaken studies with leading composers of today at various summer academies, including Franck Bedrossian, Philippe Manoury, Isabel Mundry, and Yann Robin.  His works have been premiered by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Multilatérale and Klangforum Wien.  Most recently, his first opera chasing waterfalls, co-composed with Berlin’s Studio for Sonic Experiences “kling klang klong”, made its world premiere at Semperoper Dresden in Germany in September 2022, on which occasion he led the performance as conductor.

In tandem with his creative and performative activities, Lee is also a passionate pedagogue, having been conferred the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) in 2020.  He is currently an assistant lecturer at the Hong Kong University, a part-time chamber music faculty at the HKAPA, as well as a teaching faculty of the Lucerne Festival Academy.
