Concert – A Dialogue Between Jazz and Guangdong Music is a crossover concert led by versatile music makers, with Chiu Tsang-hei as music advisor and music arrangement in the crossover ensemble session by Ng Cheuk-yin and jazz guitarist Teriver Cheung.  Cheung will also lead the local jazz chamber group Ensemble Transience, to perform with the homegrown Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble and guest performers in a collaborative programme covering a spectrum of Guangdong music, Jazz and the newly-arranged fusion works.

Chiu Tsang-hei (Music Advisor)

Chiu Tsang-hei is recognised in the music industry as a multi-talented practitioner, from composer, arranger, record producer and Music Director of pop concerts, as well as film scores.  In his music career which spans over 30 years, Chiu has collaborated with singers such as Coco Lee, Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Sally Yeh, Kit Chan, Hacken Lee, Kelly Chan, Sammi Cheng and many more.  He also produced many songs and albums, having won tremendous professional acclaim and awards in major pop music awards. In addition to producing songs and albums, Chiu has also been the Music Director for many local and Asian superstars, including Andy Lau, Hacken Lee, Sally Yeh and Coco Lee.

Beginning 2005, Chiu, whose music expertise covered not only pop music but also classical music, was invited to curate many concert series, such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual Pop Music series.  He was Music Director and Music Advisor, and conductor on several occasions.  They include Disney 90th Anniversary Concert, the Koji Tamaki Premium Symphonic Concert with the Japanese icon Koji Tamchi, and Glanced Memorabilia: Soundtracks with Love and Memories with the Inheritage Philharmonic.

In 2012, Chiu composed the theme music for the Hong Kong Tourism Board's key programme, Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations, which is still used today. In 2019, he was the Music Mentor of the signature tune for the Hong Kong Museum of Art’s Creative Music Programme.  He has also been on the panel of judges of Hong Kong Television Broadcast Limited's popular singing competition programmes, The Voice and The Voice of the Stars for several consecutive years.  In 2014, he was invited to be the witness to the Guinness World Records for the 10,000-count concert organised by RTHK and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.  His professional status is therefore widely recognized by the industry and the public.

In addition, Chiu is also active in the writing of advertising jingles and film scores, among which the film Comrades: Almost a Love Story won the Best Original Film Score at the Hong Kong Film Awards.  In 2016, Chiu set up My Main Stage – Music Production Pilot Programme to provide music production training and offer a platform for students interested in the music industry in Hong Kong to showcase their works.

 

Teriver Cheung (Music Director, Guitar and Music Arrangement*)

The jazz magazine, JazzTimes has this to say of Teriver Cheung: “(He) demonstrates an impressive command of his instrument and reveals a mature, composerly approach.”   Cheung has an extensive track record performing with leading artists such as the Latin Grammy Award winner Eddie Gomez, Eric Marienthal, Keita Ogawa and many more.  He often leads his band to perform in major music events such as Jazz Marathon for the International Jazz Day, Jazz W Ruinach Festival in Poland, and the Taichung Jazz Festival.  

Cheung’s unique and richly diverse background in music has made him one of the most active local composers, musicians and curators in recent years.  As guest artist, he has performed with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and mainstream music organisations.  He is currently on the visiting faculty of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Education University.  He also organizes masterclasses and guided talks with demonstration performances in secondary schools and on campus in tertiary institutes, in a bid to promote interest in jazz music.

 

Ng Cheuk-yin (Music Arrangement*)

Ng Cheuk-yin is a composer, music producer, sheng performer and a cappella artist.

He is the Artistic Director of the a cappella choral theatre company, Yat Po Singers, the first Artist Associate (2006 – 2008) of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Music Director of the fusion group “SIU2”.  After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a degree in music, he went on to study Japanese at the International Christian University in Tokyo, and Jazz Music at Codarts University of the Arts in the Netherlands.  Ng was a recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Award for Best Artist om 2012; Best Composition in CASH Golden Sail Music Awards for his theatrical choral concert Rock Hard and double sheng concerto Before the City Collapses in 2009 and 2013 respectively; and twice the CASH Golden Sail Most Performed Works Award for his choral work Singing Voices of the World in 2014 and 2019.

Other compositions by Ng include Fly, White and Before the City Collapses for the Hong Kong Sinfonietta; and Project Fly in 2020 which was an online version for the 2007 work, Fly for the Hong Kong Sinfonietta; Rock Hard, Sing, Sang, Sung and Requiem HK and Pica Pica Choose for Yat Po Singers; the score for the concert Herbal, Vocal or Motional, and This Victoria Has No Secret, two crossover collaborations between Yat Po Singers and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Ng’s discography includes the solo a cappella albums, Two Are Better Than One, and NGyin Single Singers.

 

Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble

The Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble is a professional Chinese chamber music ensemble with its focus on the local community and on producing quality chamber concerts.  Founded in 2003, it has a mission of developing Chinese music culture in Hong Kong and delivering the unique charm of Chinese ensemble music known for being “small but elegant, and simple but refined”.  The ensemble’s current resident musicians are all music graduates from various institutes in Hong Kong, with rich experience in concert performance.  In a bid to perpetuate the unique Cantonese music culture of Hong Kong, the Windpipe Cantonese Music Quintet was founded in 2018.  In 2011, the group was incorporated as the “Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble Limited”, with renowned conductor Ho Man-chuen as its Artistic Advisor and the group’s founder, Chan Chiu-yin, as Executive Director.  It was a landmark for the way forward for the group.  The Ensemble is a grantee of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and a charitable institution of a public character in Hong Kong.

It has given over 60 subscription concerts and over 600 educational outreach concerts, and has performed with numerous virtuosi from Hong Kong and other parts of the world.  It has also gone on tour and cultural exchange to 20 countries and regions in Asia, North America and Europe.

 

Ensemble Transience 

Formed by Teriver Cheung in 2017, Ensemble Transience is a chamber group focuses on contemporary music with hybrid of modern jazz and classical music languages, incorporate improvisation into composed materials.

Their project "Composition & Improvisation", supported by Home Affairs Bureau Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme, aims to explore more creative collaborations and musical possibilities between Jazz and classical musicians, and to promote musical education to the younger generation.  Debut album “The Episodes” recorded in Taipei, was released in Jan 20, 2019.

 

Ho Man-chuen (Conductor)

Ho Man-chuen is a renowned music educationist and conductor.  Emigrated to Hong Kong in 1980, Ho joined the Music Office and held the positions as Assistant Music Officer and Music Officer until his retirement in 2009.  During his tenure, he has nurtured numerous young musicians.  Ho is currently appointed as an instructor of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Resident Conductor of the Academy Chinese Orchestra, Artistic Adviser of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, and Artistic Adviser cum Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra.

Ho studied conducting with Xia Feiyun, and participated in conducting masterclasses held by Tang Muhai, Chen Zhaohuang and Peng Xiuwen.  He had been the conductor of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra for 29 years and had taken the orchestra to tour in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Nanjing in the Mainland. In Hong Kong,  He has conducted numerous local orchestras, including the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Joint Orchestra of Hong Kong (for 1997 reunification concert), Academy Chinese Orchestra, etc., and has collaborated with renowned musicians including Min Huifan, Xiao Baiyong, Yu Qiwei, Zhu Changyao, Hao Yuqi, Gong Yi, and others.

 

Yu Qiwei (Gaohu)^

Professor Yu Qiwei is a gaohu virtuoso from China with National Class One Musician accreditation.  He is currently Head of Chinese Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, supervisor on the Master in Musicology and Chinese Instrumental Music programmes of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Vice President of the Professional Committee for Huqin Artists under the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, Chief Editor of the Volume on Gaohu of An Encyclopaedia of Chinese Music, as well as supervisor on the Master or Doctoral programmes of Chinese instrumental music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, China Conservatory of Music and Central Conservatory of Music, and Wuhan Conservatory of Music.  He was formerly the Company Director of the Guangzhou National Orchestra; Associate Company Director, Concertmaster and Artistic Adviser of the Guangdong National Orchestra.

Yu trained under Cantonese music virtuosi Liu Tianyi, Zhu Hai, Huang Rijin, Zhang Shao and Wang Yiqin, majoring in gaohu at the Academy for People’s Arts of Guangdong and graduating in 1975.  He was the champion of the gaohu competition at the 2nd Canton Music Flower Show (1980); winner of the first prize for Outstanding Performance at the National Instrumental Solo Competition (1982); a Class One Award – Ensemble Champion at the first All Mainland Invitational Competition for Guangdong Music (1987); recipient of the first Mainland Golden Record Award for his gaohu solo album Birds Returning to the Grove (1989); was named an Honoured Recipient of the State Council Special Subsidy for his Outstanding Contribution to Mainland’s Performing Arts (1992); and Artist of the Year – Music in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards (2015).  Yu has performed and given lectures in Europe, the United States, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other regions in Asia.  He was acclaimed as "a scholar artist" and "an artist scholar".  Critics described his performances as "beautifully executed with far-reaching insights, poetic imagination and philosophical depth", and that he has "opened up a new realm in the art of the Chinese gaohu".  His publications include a collection of critical essays The Artistic Realm of Cantonese Music and a teaching aid entitled Famous Gaohu Pieces in Cantonese Music – compiled and demonstrated by Yu Qiwei.  His discography covers over 60 titles, including gaohu solo albums, Guangdong Music, Erhu Classics and more, released under several labels.

 

Tam Po-shek (Dongxiao)

Tam Po-shek is a renowned dongxiao virtuoso and maker of Chinese flutes, also an active figure in the Chinese literati pursuits of poetry, calligraphy, painting and music.

Tam began learning Chinese calligraphy, painting and Chinese flutes at a young age.  He later devoted himself to studying the performing techniques and making of the dongxiao, while conducting research on its history and cultural traditions.  His art brings together the traditional and the modern, and expresses his accomplishments in cultural and spiritual terms.

He has performed all over Mainland as well as many parts of the world, including solo performances of his original compositions in arts festivals of the world.  He is also actively involved in record production, advertising and scoring for films.  His discography numbers over a hundred album releases and more than twenty films.  Critics praise his performance as “xiao music from the deep recesses of the soul”, and “he is so adept in using the xiao to tell each story”.  Mainland’s Dragon Television, in an exclusive interview with him, describes the sounds from Tam's xiao as “so ethereal and muted yet is so panoramic”.  He was featured in many interviews and documentaries on the subject in television and on radio in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and France.  With his dedication to music education, Tam has accepted invitations from cultural organisations in Mainland China and abroad to hold lectures and give performances.  His discography includes 13 CD recordings featuring his original dongxiao compositions.  Among them, Sounds of the Xiao that Traverses Heaven and Earth was awarded The Most Popular Album at the 2018 Beijing International Audio Exhibition Music Festival.  His publications include The Techniques of the Dizi, Xiao Scores, the essay collections As Leaves Fall between Heaven and Earth, Hong Kong Stories, and As Brush and Ink Easily Flow, and a photo collection, In Search of Happiness.

 

Chan Pik-sum (Erhu)

Chan Pik-sum trained at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she took a double major in gaohu and erhu as well as Guangdong music under the gaohu maestro, Yu Qiwei.  Upon graduating from the Academy with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree, she furthered her music studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was awarded a Master of Arts (Music) degree.  Chan is a seasoned concertmaster of several orchestras, having led the Academy Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble.  In recent years, at the invitation of the Hong Kong SAR Government Home Affairs Bureau and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office respectively, she went on tour to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Kazakhstan with secretaries Lau Kong-wah and Edward Yau Tang-wah, performing in recitals and other concerts in a bid to promote the music culture of Hong Kong.  In 2018, she was presented the Certificate of Commendation by the Secretary for Home Affairs for her promotion of, and participation in, culture and the arts activities on a global front.

In recent years, Chan has been active on the pop music scene and in collaboration with various media, such as performing at the pop concerts of Albert Au, Hacken Lee, Hins Cheung, Jun Kung and tenor Warren Mok.  She is also committed to promoting traditional local culture by participating in a number of Cantonese music and Nanyin performances, some of which have been recorded for release.

 

Bryan Lai (Yangqin)

Bryan Lai is a yangqin player born in Hong Kong.  He began his training under Zhang Ruzhu when he was 9, and between 2001 and 2008, he received rigorous and systematic undergraduate and postgraduate training in yangqin under Liu Yuening and Gui Xili at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.  His outstanding musicianship has won him the Hong Kong, Macao and Overseas Chinese Students Scholarship.  In 2008, he gave a highly successful graduation concert in fulfillment of his Master's degree with China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra at the Beijing Concert Hall, which marked him as the first Hong Kong musician to hold a Master in yangqin performance in Hong Kong.  

Lai has performed in Young Musicians of Asia Concert Series (Hong Kong), Cracow International Music Festival (Poland), The 9th Hackbrett (Yangqin) World Congress (Germany), Mexican International Salterio (Yangqin) Festival and has given recitals.  He published a co-authored collection Chinese and Western Yangqin Classics and released a DVD recording Yangqin Music in Guangdong.  His name is listed in the art tome Art in Mainland China and 100 Most Influential Artists in Mainland China.  On the concert stage, Lai performs with confidence and flair.   His extensive performing experience and assimilation of other artists’ expertise have made his music rich in nuances and content.  He engages the audience with his vivid display of musicianship and the intricate depths of each piece.

 

Crisel Consunji (Vocal)

Crisel Consunji is an award-winning actress and an accomplished musical theatre performer.   She received a nomination for Best Actress and Best New Performer at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards and won Best New Performer for her acclaimed portrayal in the film “Still Human”.  She began her professional career in theatre from the age of ten performing with the Repertory Philippines in Manila.  Her roles include Beauty in Beauty and the Beast, Susan Pevensie in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods.  She is a recipient of the prestigious Ani ng Dangal Award from the National Commission on Culture and the Arts in the Philippines.  In 2008, she moved to Hong Kong to work at Hong Kong Disneyland. Her performances included the lead role of Bebe in The Golden Mickeys.

In recent years Crisel Consunji has also committed herself to early childhood education with a focus on arts-based learning for young children.  She is the founder of Baumhaus, an arts education initiative and creative space for families which provides nurturing and support with a variety of educational and community programmes.  She also leads the distribution and training for the US-based Kindermusik programme in Hong Kong which empowers families to raise their children with a love of music.  Crisel Consunji has completed two master's degrees in Early Childhood Education and Global Politics.  In June 2021, SCMP praised her sold-out return to the stage in City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong's A Night at the Musicals as "stunning." 

 

Kong Chun-kit (Nanyin / Percussion Leader / Slide Guitar)

Kong Chun-kit is a Chinese opera dramaturg who sets his focus on creating the script and the music while occasionally appearing on stage and playing various musical instruments.  He is therefore one of the rare versatile artists in Chinese traditional theatre in Hong Kong today.  He founded Aphros Cultural Arts Studio and Aphros YouTube in 2020.

Kong began comprehensive training in Chinese traditional theatre at the age of nine, with Cantonese operatic song in classical singing style from Cheung Yim-hung; martial arts of the Northern School from Hon Yin-ming; and Cantonese music and performance under Tsang Seung, Szeto Siu, Ko Yun-kuen and Lui Hung-kwong before continuing his training at the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong.  He graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2018, where he trained at the School of Chinese Opera.  Kong was the recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award for Young Artists (Xiqu) in 2012.   In 2014, he was recommended jointly by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Chinese Theatre Association to attend the National Youth Opera Musicians Programme at the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

In terms of theatre training, he learned playwriting with Raymond To and Chinese and Western drama with Fredric Mao, and experimented with ways of cross-cultural thinking and curating under the instructions of Danny Yung and Ho Ying-fung.  With traditional Oriental aesthetics as the starting point, Kong aims to retrace the origin of Chinese traditional theatre and explore new ways of mind and body training.  Some of his notable works include the musical Journey to the West Rewind for the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Cantonese Opera Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers.

^Yu Qiwei will not be able to perform due to health reasons.  Chan Kai-him will be substituting for the Gaohu solo part of Gaohu and Ensemble “Medley of Cantonese Music Classics”.
