During its Hong Kong debut in 1962, the London Philharmonic Orchestra performed a series of jubilant concerts for the inauguration of Hong Kong City Hall.  This year, the festive sound of the orchestra will return from afar to celebrate the venue's 60th anniversary.  With its new Principal Conductor Edward Gardner at the helm, the Orchestra will join hands with violinist Nicola Benedetti to record two concerts specially curated for Hong Kong.  Two screenings are produced with advanced soundscape audio system to present experiential concerts with quality sound and great ambience in the concert hall.

In addition to the selected pieces from the 1962 concert programme, the Orchestra will feature the premiere of Lullabies, a commissioned work by local composer Charles Kwong to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Hong Kong City Hall.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

One of the finest orchestras on the international stage, the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham.  Since then, its Principal Conductors have included Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur.  In 2007, Vladimir Jurowski became the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor.  Edward Gardner is the current Principal Conductor, who took up the position from 2021 onwards.

The LPO has performed at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall since it opened in 1951, becoming the Resident Orchestra in 1992.  It also has residencies in Brighton, Eastbourne and Saffron Walden, and performs regularly around the United Kingdom.  The Orchestra also tours internationally, performing to sell-out audiences worldwide.

The Orchestra broadcasts regularly on television and radio, and has recorded soundtracks for numerous films including The Lord of the Rings.  In 2005, it began releasing live, studio and archive recordings on its own CD label, which now numbers over 100 releases.

Edward Gardner (Conductor)

Edward Gardner began his tenure as the Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) in 2021; he is also the Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic (Norway), a position he has held since 2015.  He is also the Artistic Advisor of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, and will take up the position of Music Director in 2024.

In demand as a guest conductor, previous seasons saw Gardner’s debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker and many more.

Born in Gloucester in 1974, Gardner was educated at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music.  He went on to become the Assistant Conductor of The Hallé and the Music Director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera. His many accolades include being named the Royal Philharmonic Society Award Conductor of the Year (2008), an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera (2009) and being appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for Services to Music in the Queen’s Birthday Honours (2012).  Edward Gardner’s position with the LPO is generously supported by Aud Jebsen.

Nicola Benedetti (Violin)

Nicola Benedetti is one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation.  Her ability to captivate audiences and her wide appeal as an advocate for classical music has made her one of the most influential artists of today.

Previous seasons’ highlights included collaborations with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Seattle Symphony, and many more.  Winner of the Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo in 2020, as well as Best Female Artist at both 2012 and 2013 Classical BRIT Awards, Benedetti records exclusively for Decca Record, under Universal Music Group.

Benedetti was appointed the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2019 and awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2017.  She plays the Gariel Stradivarius, made in 1717, courtesy of Jonathan Moulds.
