Cantonese music, also known as "Guangdong music", originated in the Pearl River Delta area of Guangdong Province.  It started off as entr’acte music in folk ditty singing shows and drama productions.  Riding on the growing popularity of the recording, broadcasting and film industries in coastal cities in the early 20th century, Cantonese music developed in leaps and bounds.  At that time, Hong Kong was one of the leading hubs of Cantonese music with the residency of renowned musicians such as Lui Man-shing, Wan Chi-chung and Wong Yuet-sang.  Music societies, saloons and Chinese nightclubs increased in great numbers in Hong Kong, making Cantonese music, with its blend of East and West, a unique local popular culture.  Today, Cantonese music is no longer the mainstay of popular culture, but there are still many artists who continue to spread the historical and cultural heritage of this folk music tradition.  Yu Qiwei, a maestro in contemporary Cantonese music, has been a beacon in the field with his consummate performing techniques on the gaohu.  He has also been teaching young musicians in Hong Kong for many years, thus helping the torch of Cantonese music to be passed from generation to generation.  In this concert, Yu will perform a select programme of Cantonese music with his former students and mentees, in true spirit of continuing an invaluable legacy.
