The performance will run for about 1 hour and 30 minutes including a 15 minute intermission.

Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually.  Latecomers will only be admitted during the intermission or at a suitable break.

The presenter reserves the right to change the programme and substitute artists.

Piano: Colleen Lee

Since winning the Sixth Prize of the 15th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition, Colleen Lee has performed extensively throughout Asia, Europe and North America in solo recitals and with orchestras such as the Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra among others.

Born in Hong Kong, Lee started her piano lesson at the age of four.  Subsequently she was trained at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) under Eleanor Wong.  After obtaining the Bachelor of Music Degree, she was awarded scholarship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and the Bernard Van Zuiden Scholarship to further her studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover with Arie Vardi.  Lee was the recipient of many international awards besides her success at the Chopin Competition, including First Prize at the 3rd Seiler International Piano Competition in Kitzingen, Germany, the 2003 Dorothy Mackenzie Artist Recognition Award, Third Place and Critic and Audience Prizes at the 15th International Competition for Piano and Orchestra in Cantù, Italy, Prize Winner of the 1st Hong Kong International Piano Competition, the Pro Musicis International Award, Gina Bachauer International Artist Competition Award, Sendai International Music Competition Award, and was Laureate of the 16th Santander International Piano Competition in Spain. 

Her discography includes an all Chopin album recorded on the Pleyel piano released by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, and an all Scarlatti Sonata CD by Naxos.

 

Violin: Gallant Ho

A violinist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 2002, Gallant Ho earned a Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a scholarship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund in 2000.  At the Conservatory, he trained in violin under He Wei and Camilla Wicks, and chamber music with Nathan Schwartz.  Prior to his studies in the United States, Ho obtained his bachelor’s degree at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), his teachers included Michael Ma, Pavel Prantl and Lo Chu-tung.  He also took masterclasses given by Joseph Silverstein, Henry Roth, Pinchas Zukerman, Yfrah Neaman, Sylvia Rosenberg, Jorja Fleezanis, Elmar Oliveira, Sergiu Luca and Isaac Stern.

Ho has performed as a soloist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Academy Symphony Orchestra of the HKAPA.  He was a winner in many competitions, including the First Prize in the Sandra Wagstaff Scholarship for String Concerto Competition in 1997, Second Prize in the Commercial Radio Hong Kong Awards in 1996, and Third Prize in the Kocian Violin Competition (Youth Class) in the Czech Republic in 1994.  He was invited to perform in the Pacific Music Festival in Japan in 2000.

As a chamber musician, Ho was a member of the Ensemble-in-Residence 2015-16 of the Music Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  Currently, he also serves as part-time faculty at both the HKAPA and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

 

Cello: Zhu Lin

Currently Principal Cello of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Zhu Lin was born in Shanghai.  At the age of 15, she entered The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts on a full scholarship, trained under Ray Wang.  Later, she received Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Music at The Juilliard School with a full scholarship, under the guidance of Joel Krosnick.  This was followed by a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Alan Stepansky.

Throughout her performance career, Zhu has appeared in some of the finest venues including the Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre and Steinway Hall in New York, Hong Kong Culture Centre and Hong Kong City Hall.  As a soloist, she has performed with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and Juilliard Orchestra.  She has also worked alongside many conductors, including Yu Long, Charles Dutoit, Shui Lan and Krzysztof Penderecki.  Zhu performed with Gerard Schwarz, the then Music Director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, at the Avery Fisher Hall of the Lincoln Centre in New York in 2003.  The Strad magazine described her performance as “a very persuasive interpreter... her tone is warm and expressive, her vibrato exceptionally variegated”.

Zhu has won many prizes, including the First Prize at the 3rd National Cello Competition in China and Juilliard Cello Concerto Competition.  In 2017, she was presented the Magnolia Silver Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development of the cultural industry in Shanghai.
