Produced and hosted by Angela Hang, seasoned local dance artist and director of Studiodanz, Move Beyond is an online series following notable dancers in Hong Kong. By documenting their daily practice, classes they teach, rehearsals for performances and competitions, as well as personal interviews, the programme explores the various dance styles - genres still considered as a subculture in Hong Kong - and offers the audience insights into ways the dancers express their emotions and perceptions through their bodies and dance styles. At the same time, they will have glimpses of the dancers’ personal stories, their bittersweet life experiences and how, despite many difficulties and challenges in their artistic journeys, they persist in pursuing their dreams.

Conducted in Cantonese with Chinese subtitles.

The programme is in 6 episodes, each approximately 15 minutes long.

Episode 1: Way of Life

Guest: Luen Mo (YEUNG Hiu Fung)

Luen Mo has a well-defined goal – to become a world-class dancer through Street Dance. Apart from adhering to his daily regimen, he believes that the only way to achieve a high level of success is to make dancing an integral part of his life.


LuenMo (YEUNG Hiu Fung)

LuenMo is a member of Hong Kong local Hip Hop crew StrangersCrew and international Hip Hop crew LEGION X. For the past ten years, LuenMo has competed and has won multiple championships, such as HongKong ArtsFestival@TaiKwun - HipHop 1 on 1 (winner), Paris Juste Debout French Prelims 2020 House 2 on 2 (winner), and Malaysia Whassup DOC Vol.2 - The Best Showcase.

LuenMo also has rich teaching experience in universities and dance studios, and performance experience for events and with different art groups.

Episode 2: Respect

Guest: Trian

Trian, who dances Jazz Funk and Twerk, connects her inner world to the worlds beyond through dance. Dancing allows her to communicate not only with the outside world and demonstrate her confidence, but also with her inner world. Through understanding her thoughts, Trian gets to learn how to respect and be kind to herself, and to realise the unlimited possibilities in her body and live life ‘out of the box’.

Age Recommendation: Best for ages 16 or above


Trian KONG

Trian Kong has been well trained for various dance styles since 2008 and became a professional dancer and dance tutor.

She has extensive performing experience in public shows, concerts, and events for companies and clients who include famous artist Grasshop, Leon Lai, Twins, G.E.M etc. Her strength can be certain for her near 10 years of teaching experience and dance performance.

Trian is full of enthusiasm for dance, and strives to infect the people around her through teaching Qitian in dance, and convey the beauty of dance through various performances.

Specialties: Jazz, Jazz Funk, Twerk Dance, Freestyle.

Episode 3: Exploration

Guest: Hotung

Waacking dancer Hotung believes that, apart from proficient skills, emotional expression is essential to elevate dance to a higher level. She shares in the interview how to gain more insights in dance through delving into music and its cultural and historical context.


Hotung WONG

Since starting her career as a dancer in 2008, Hotung has been trained in different dance styles, including Waacking, House and Popping. She completed her study in creative media and entertainment technology at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education in 2013. In 2020, she graduated from Coventry University in the UK in media design. She is a member of the dance groups Shíyàn z, IHOWHK and Majestè and is one of the organisers of Waack City HK. Over the past 12 years, she has participated in numerous competitions and performances as a dancer and adjudicator. She is also a multiple winner, including the runner-up at “Battle Zone All Style” in Hong Kong Arts Festival 2019, championships at “Street Dance x Fashion Show x Busking Carnival (Champion)” organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, and at “Hong Kong Street Dance - Waacking Battle” in 2021. Over the years, she has also been a dance instructor for various organisations and institutions, including Studiodanz, BCDC, Collab Dance, City University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, etc.

 

Episode 4: Physical Musicality

Guest: Louis PONG

Popping is a dance genre full of rhythm. Dancer Louis shares with us how he coordinates body movements with the unique techniques of Popping to articulate various layers of sound and music. 


PONG Chun Tat, Louis

With a dance career that dates from 2003, Louis is currently the convener of the Hong Kong Street Dance Development Alliance and one of the principals of the famous Hong Kong Popping group, King Botics. Graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University, Louis choreographs and trains students in higher education institutions for their annual tours and anniversary performances and has won the keen support of them all. In addition, Louis has received awards for solo at numerous street dance competitions and garnered the championship in three consecutive editions of the FuNkoLogy competition in Hong Kong. He has also represented Hong Kong in multiple overseas competitions.

Currently teaching at various dance schools and schools from primary to tertiary levels, Louis regularly organises courses, provides professional dance training and produces various events for organisations. He has also organised street dance competitions, inviting world-class dancers to Hong Kong for exchanges and to nurture a new generation of dancers in a bid to further promote the local street dance culture.

Episode 5: Internal Force

Guest: Hongboy     

Dancer Hongboy describes to us how, through years of exploring Breaking and studying changes of movement compositions, he discovers the unlimited possibilities in his body. Using his body as a storage vessel of strength, he releases various kinds of emotions and inner perceptions through each New Style movement.


Hongboy Chan

As one of the members of Hong Kong’s top Bboy crew “Rhythm Attack”, Hong is a major player in Hong Kong’s Breaking scene.

Since forming “Rhythm Attack” in 2000, Hong has traveled to different countries in North America, Europe and Asia and has battled with some of the world’s top Bboys. Together with his crew, he has won numerous battles and has been invited as a guest performer at many important breaking events.

Furthermore, Hong was one of the committee members in Hong Kong Breaking Team Qualifier, to help coordinate and manage local prelim & competitions of Olympic 2024 in Paris.

 

Episode 6: Dance as Mission (Available from 9 Oct)

Host: Angela

Angela interviews five dancers to learn about the explorations and experiences in their dance journeys. As a senior in the dance circle, Angela leads us to appreciate different kinds of dancing styles and discusses with the dancers how to drive the local dance culture forward.


Angela Hang

Angela Hang is a dance artist with a long track record. As founder and director of Studiodanz, she has been promoting modern dance and street dance, and has trained up younger generations of dancers for many years. Hang graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1991, majoring in contemporary dance. With her outstanding performance during her undergraduate years, she was awarded an Asian Cultural Council fellowship to further her studies at the American Dance Festival in North Carolina and in New York respectively. She is recognised by the local dance circle as an artist with an avant garde dance style and forward-looking ideas.

Since 2020, Hang has been producing Angela Insight, a series of interviews featuring local dance virtuosi and dancers, on which they could talk about their dreams and bittersweet stories. Aired on social media platforms, the series has received rave response from fellow artists. The success of the programme has inspired Hang to dig into dance styles which are often deemed as a local subculture. Through presenting various dance styles and following the dancers’ everyday activities, the series takes the audience behind the scenes to learn more about the dancers’ artistic journeys and their forte. It also addresses the diverse development and status of the local dance scene, as well as the profound impact of the promotion and development of these dance styles on the younger generation of dancers.
