Ti Lung and John Chiang are a pair of small-time crooks during the early Republic of China who join a rebel group and become patriotic heroes unintentionally. Assisted by Ching Li who plays a warlord's daughter, they successfully help the rebels steal weapons from the warlord. The duo's battle of brains and brawn with the warlord was exciting to watch. Chang Cheh was known for his ability to discover male stars. After grooming Jimmy Wang Yu, Chang took Ti and Chiang under his wing. With strong onscreen chemistry, their playfulness and bantering during the adventure with Ching is also reminiscent of the exuberant male bonding in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
