Introduction

In 2003, two luminous stars of Hong Kong passed away. We lost Leslie Cheung on 1 April and Anita Mui on 30 December that year. Yet their passing was not the end of their art and their glory. Instead, it marked the beginning of a magnificent legacy.

2023 is the 20th anniversary of Cheung and Mui's passing. The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA), after presenting the programme 'Glory Days: When Leslie Met Anita' in 2018, is launching 'Revisiting the Glory Days – The Legacy of Leslie and Anita', a package of 20 films featuring the incandescent stars. This programme will focus on their films made in the 1980s through the new millennium in an effort to examine the role played by cinema in the glorious development of Hong Kong popular culture.

Presenting the opening programme for the inaugural Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival, HKFA will unveil 'Revisiting the Glory Days' with a special event. Theme songs from the films of Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung will be performed by popular singer Gin Lee before the screening of the opening film Who's the Woman, Who's the Man (1996). The songs will be sung with new arrangement by famed music director Chiu Tsang-hei and the performance will be further enriched by images and clips from the films of Mui and Cheung. The evening promises to be a glorious experience for the Hong Kong people to enjoy and contemplate the magic of our popular culture.

'Revisiting the Glory Days – The Legacy of Leslie and Anita' will be presented from 22 April through 30 December in 2023. Special versions will be screened, such as the Canada theatrical version of Days of Being Wild (1990) and an edition of Kawashima Yoshiko (1990) with an alternative ending. Different formats of projection will be used, treating the audience to diversified viewing experiences. Some of the films will be projected in 35mm format. Others will be presented in digitised configuration, some of them after 4K restoration, such as Rouge (1988) and Once a Thief (1991). The wonders of popular culture will blossom in the glorious light and sound of Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung.
