Loosely based on the life and crimes of Al Capone, Howard Hawks' classic gangster yarn was the most controversial film in America upon initial release. Billionaire producer Howard Hughes set out to make the most grisly and violent film possible and as a result, much of Hawks' original vision was butchered and reedited by the censors and it took another 50 years before Scarface was restored to its original glory. An immigrant street punk, Tony rises to power through intimidation, betrayal and remorseless violence, defying his superiors and disrespecting their traditions. His aggressive approach gets him the women, money and fancy clothes, but the one thing he desires most - his sister, Cesca - continues to elude him. Ultimately, his distrust, jealousy and paranoia will cost him everything. Riddled with great performances from the actors, startling imagery and unparalleled levels of violence for its time, Scarface stripped the screen gangster of its glamour and shot the mythology so full of holes the genre has been stained by its influence ever since.
