Made in 1980, this influential television series set in the criminal underworld of 1920’s Shanghai continues to spark remakes, spin-offs and homages even to this day. Chow Yun Fat and Ray Lui co-star as best friends Hui Man-keung and Ting Lik – one a charismatic, calculating opportunist who becomes the head of the underworld, and the other a loyal, but rough fruit stand vendor who joins Hui in his conquest. In the first three episodes, we see Hui arriving in Shanghai from Beijing and meet Ting for the first time. After becoming the right hand of an entertainment industry tycoon, Hui quickly rises to the top of the criminal world and builds up his own gang with his comrade-in-arms. In the third episode, we finally meet Fung Ching-ching (Angie Chiu), the woman who will change the two men’s lives forever.
