Beauty pageant winner-turned-actress Lam Kin-ming created a huge stir in Hong Kong with the most daring performance of her career, playing a poor factory girl who is forced into prostitution by a low-level street punk. When she attempts to escape, the triad punishes her by shaving her head, while the kind young man (James Yi Lui) who tries to save her is beaten to a bloody pulp. Made during a time when the city lived in fear under organized crime, the film depicts the triad members as ruthless and brutal bullies. The film’s finale, when the young man finally brings the cycle of violence back on the triads, was in some ways director Cheung Sum’s way of helping Hong Kong vent its anger and dissatisfaction towards the organized crime world.
