This landmark crime drama broke new grounds in the undercover cop genre in 2002. Not only did it vividly portray the psychological pain of a heroic cop pretending to be a villain, it turns the table on the formula by presenting the moral dilemma of a villain pretending to be a hero in the police force. The film presents a morally gray world in which the only purely good character dies halfway through the film, while the villain who wins the battle actually loses the way by having to face the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. Even 12 years after its release, Infernal Affairs is a surprisingly relevant portrait of the times we live in.
